End Pepper Spray Ban at University of Missouri – Columbia

In Missouri, it is currently legal to carry pepper aerosol sprays.

On campus at the University of Missouri at Columbia, per the 110.010 Regulations page, students are prohibited from carrying pepper aerosol sprays. The policy under section B subsection 4a states “The open possession of and discharge of firearms, weapons and explosives on University property including University farms is prohibited except in regularly approved programs or by University agents or employees in the line of duty.

This rule shall not be construed as consent to the possession of concealed firearms, weapons, or explosives on University property.”

According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, 1 in every 5 women and 1 in every 16 men are sexually assaulted at college.

Students should be allowed to carry the tools necessary to protect themselves should dangerous situations arise. I hereby petition Dr. Mun Y. Choi to amend campus policy and allow the student body at the age of 18 or older to carry pepper aerosol spray for purposes of self-defense.
