We, the undersigned, call on Auburn University to immediately revise its policies to allow students to carry non-lethal self-defense tools on campus. The safety and well-being of students must be a top priority, and it is essential that Auburn University recognizes the right of students to protect themselves.
Every student deserves to feel safe, yet incidents of violence and harassment are a serious concern. Recent studies show that 1 in 5 female undergraduates experience sexual assault, and Auburn University is not immune to this national issue. Despite the dedication of campus police, they cannot be everywhere at once. In emergency situations, response times can range from 5 to 10 minutes—an eternity in a life-threatening scenario.
To address this, we demand that Auburn University allow students to carry non-lethal self-defense tools such as pepper spray, pepper gel, mace, and stun guns. These tools are proven to deter attackers and give students the means to defend themselves until help arrives. For example, pepper spray and mace have an effectiveness rate of over 85%, and stun guns have been shown to incapacitate attackers in 94% of cases.
Auburn University’s current policies leave students vulnerable. By not allowing these non-lethal tools, the administration is effectively compromising student safety. President Christopher B. Roberts, we urge you to act now by amending these outdated policies and allowing students to protect themselves with these essential self-defense tools. The time to prioritize student safety is now, before another preventable incident occurs.
