On March 4, 2015, Students at Dixie State University filed a First Amendment lawsuit against their university with assistance from FIRE. The lawsuit was filed after Dixie State refused to approve promotional flyers created by the YAL chapter based on their content. Dixie State administrators told student plaintiff William Jergins that the flyers would not be approved until he removed references to the political figures on them because school policy does not permit students to “disparage” or “mock individuals.” Last September the campus agreed to revise the policies, provide training to all staff and faculty about the new policies, and awarded the students $50,000 for damages.
