End Mandatory Housing at ULL

University of Louisiana at Lafayette (UL Lafayette) should abolish the “Live On Requirement” that mandates all unmarried, full-time undergraduate students, regardless of age or emancipation status, to live in campus residence halls as long as space is available.

This policy limits our freedom to choose our housing as adults. Lafayette offers affordable off-campus housing options that are more cost-effective than on-campus rates. Campus housing costs range from $3,500 to $5,000 per semester, while local rentals range from $400 to $800 per month. Off-campus options often include utilities and are conveniently located. Students should have the right to make their own housing decisions.

Choosing off-campus housing can provide financial relief and promote independence and responsibility. Off-campus living also fosters a deeper connection to the local community. We demand that UL Lafayette abolish the mandatory live-on requirement and allow students to choose between on-campus and off-campus housing.

By signing this petition, we assert our right to make independent housing choices and urge the university administration to respect the diverse needs of its student body. We hereby petition the president of ULL Joseph Savoie to amend the policy to make on-campus housing voluntary.
