End Mandatory Housing at University of New Orleans

The University of New Orleans (UNO) currently requires students to live in university housing.

Student debt already burdens millions of Americans with financial struggles after their time at school. UNO should prioritize what’s best for its students over the school’s profit by returning the right of the students to make their own housing and dining decisions.

By making housing and meal plans voluntary, UNO can show that it values the well-being and financial stability of its students, allowing them to choose living options that best suit their needs and budgets.

We hereby petition the University of New Orleans president Kathy Johnson to remove the requirement for students to live in UNO housing making it optional.

At the University of New Orleans (UNO), students are increasingly dissatisfied with the current dining options, particularly at The Cove, where concerns about food quality, including undercooked meat, have been raised. Additionally, many students feel that the food quality across campus is below average and reminiscent of high school cafeteria fare. Given these concerns and the high cost associated with meal plans, many UNO students feel burdened by the mandatory meal plans. Students advocate for the flexibility to cook for themselves, citing the ability to save money and enjoy more satisfying meals. Making meal plans optional would grant students greater control over their dining choices and expenses. Making meal plans optional would address the dissatisfaction expressed by students and empower them to seek alternative dining solutions, such as utilizing on-campus grocery options or cooking in their apartments. Dorm cooking has become increasingly popular, and choosing to prioritize campus profits over the well-being of struggling college students is taking advantage of those simply trying to get an education at UNO. We urge the University of New Orleans president Kathy Johnson to make meal plans completely optional. Empowering students with these choices will not only enhance their college experience but also show that UNO values their well-being and financial stability.
