American Mayor Screening at University of Wisconsin-Whitewater

On November 28th, YAL at UW-Whitewater screened American Mayor, a documentary about a 24 year old who grew tired of his hometown politics decided to run for mayor, and filmed the entire process. Though he was unsuccessful in winning, he showed a human side to politics. We reached out to professors in Political Science, Journalism, and Film departments and many of their students came to watch. We had a great turnout of YAL members and Whitewater students in general.

After watching the documentary, we had a virtual Q&A session with Travis Irvine, the man behind American Mayor. He gave a great introduction into getting into local politics, and the importance of it. Many questions were asked about issues to run on, how to start up a campaign, and what Travis learned from the whole experience. This experience inspired one of our YAL members to run for Common Council in Whitewater. Currently, we are working on getting this member sufficient signatures. We are all excited to see how this process unfolds and how it will turn out for our member and for our town.
