Good news for all the liberty-lovers out there: Libertarianism is on the rise, and there is nothing the establishment can do about it. This weekend, American University YAL, along with hundreds of other members of Young Americans for Liberty from around the country, attended the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in National Harbor, MD.
While CPAC is traditionally known to attract libertarian-leaning individuals, CPAC 2015 was certainly a huge year not just for YAL, but for anyone who considers themselves a fan of small government. This year, hundreds of young, passionate liberty-lovers came together to support potential 2016 presidential nominee Senator Rand Paul, son of Ron Paul, a former Texas Congressman and leader of the Liberty movement.
CPAC started on Thursday with speeches from other presidential hopefuls such as Ben Carson, Chris Christie, Ted Cruz, and Scott Walker. In particular, Walker, the incumbent Governor of Wisconsin, enjoyed significant support from both moderate and establishment conservative voters.
Friday saw a speech given by Senator Rand Paul himself, who was greeted by an overwhelmingly enthusiastic and supportive crowd. Paul, who is known for his non-interventionist foreign policy and opposition to mass governmental surveillance, gave a speech in which he attacked the most-likely nominee for the Democratic Party, Hillary Clinton:
“I believe that Hillary Clinton’s abdication of responsibility, her refusal to provide an adequate defense for Benghazi, her dereliction of duty, should FOREVER preclude her from higher office. It’s time for Hillary Clinton to PERMANENTLY retire.”
YAL supporters flooded the aisles in-between seats as Senator Paul gave his speech, wearing “I Stand with Rand” t-shirts and chanting “President Paul” throughout his call to liberty-lovers.
Needless to say, Young Americans for Liberty made its presence felt as CPAC, and in the end, our activism paid off. On Saturday, CPAC announced the winner of its straw poll: RAND PAUL, FOR THE THIRD YEAR IN A ROW!
Despite attempts by organizations advocating for former Governor of Florida Jeb Bush to “bus-in” hundreds of supporters, it is clear that Young Americans for Liberty was successful in making Rand Paul the new face of the Republican Party. For traditional Conservatives and Liberals alike, this much is certain: LIBERTY IS HERE TO STAY.
