American University YAL Fights for Free Speech

On April 11, the YAL chapter at American University engaged students with an enormous free speech ball. As students passed by the spherical monstrosity, over five feet in diameter, YAL members encouraged them to write “anything they want” on the large beach ball. We wanted to promote free speech on our college campus.

Members encouraged any student who participated in plastering the speech ball with black sharpie to attend the Thursday screening of “Can We Take a Joke.” Students also signed a free speech petition to protest American University’s two unconstitutional speech codes.

YAL members hope to challenge the administration’s policies on poster-advertising and harassment. President John Nagle expects a big turnout at the “Can We Take a Joke” as a result of our club’s activism.
