Approval by Congress to accept Peace Prize

Rebulican representatives Ginny Brown Waite, Cliff Stearns, and Ron Paul are urging Obama to follow the Constitution and wait for approval from Congress before accepting the Nobel Peace Prize on December 10. Article 1 Section 9 of the Constitution states:

And no person holding any office of profit or trust under them, shall, without the consent of the Congress, accept of any present, emolument, office or title, of any kind whatever, from any king, prince or foreign state.

The Nobel Prize Commission is appointed by the parliament of Norway; therefore, the Nobel Peace Prize is considered to be awarded from a “foreign state.”
