Are the states too small to make it on their own?

John Payne at The American Conservative very reasonably says “no,” addressing four major reasons for secession into smaller governmental units: it would make government more accountable; it would make bad reveal themselves more quickly; it would allow the people to be better represented by forming smaller constituencies; and the states — as demonstrated in the map above which labels our states with the names of economically comparable countries — are big enough to take care of themselves.

So given all this, why not secede?  What exactly do we have to lose but trillions of dollars in debt, an overly aggressive foreign policy that does nothing to keep us safe, and federal taxes that are sure to only go higher?  So citizens of America….uh, disunite?
