On Thursday April 21st at 7:00 PM, 10 students gathered in the Fritz-Conrad Theater at Lenoir-Rhyne University to watch the documentary “Can We Take a Joke.” This was the first event for the Lenoir-Rhyne YAL chapter and it was a great success.
Student leaders in the chapter used posters and even made a banner to help advertise for their event. The chapter also provided popcorn and sodas and the first 8 people to show up got one of the “Can We Take a Joke” t-shirts. Everybody who attended also got a packet of information. And a personal invitation to attend our first meeting on the 25th.
The movie started around 7:15 after the President and Vice President of the chapter gave an introduction and thanked people for coming out. Then we started the movie, which was received very well by the politically diverse audience.
After the screening all of the students that came to watch the movie stayed around for a discussion of what free speech is, if free speech was a welcome thing on campus, and if they felt safe holding an unpopular view on campus. Overall the event was a great success, and we look forward to doing more events like this in the future.Published in
