“Can you ignore this?” — National Debt Awareness

The Cleveland State University YAL chapter recently held a debt awareness event for students. We created a National Debt visual for students to see in the Student Center on October 24th from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. With the title “Can You Ignore This?” many students walked past just staring at such a huge number.

We wanted to show students just how massive this debt is and inform them that we can’t continue to ignore this problem and hope it goes away. Many students weren’t surprised at the number. When asked if he knew about the debt, one student replied, “Yeah it’s huge.” Many thought it wouldn’t affect them until we passed out flyers showing just how much each taxpayer would owe to pay it off (which according to www.usdebtclock.org that number is $54,029).

We also passed out over 20 copies of the books, Why Liberty? and The Economics of Freedom: What your professors won’t tell you, along with candy and stickers.

The national debt continues to grow everyday and future generations are going to have to pay the price because of it. Even though this topic may not be a pleasant one, to talk about at least more students are aware of this problem and that’s the first step in bringing about change.
