Challenging Speech Codes at Oakland University

Only 3 days after my own chapter hosted its own free speech ball, Oakland University did one as well! This event was done on Monday, March 26th. The chapter president, Justin Wu, was excited and so were we – Myself, Rebekah Beeton and Nathan Williamson, both from the Leadership Institute – to assist. As usual, students showed massive support for free speech on their campus. We were not disappointed. We were glad when the dean approached us and told us to shut down. I recall him stating that we were required to be within a ‘free speech zone’, as well as demanded that we fill out an approval form for collecting signatures. We recorded him, and we’re hoping that FIRE will take up a successful lawsuit against the university. The eternal optimist in me says that Oakland will have free speech soon, and quite possibly, a strong chapter!
