Colby College’s YAL kick-started our year with our second-to-last Free Speech Ball on Friday the 6th in the campaign to convince Colby to adopt the Chicago Principles regarding the freedom of expression!
Colby’s short and unique January Term meant that many students were off campus, and those that stayed were weary of braving the wintery Maine weather. Even so, the odd sight of a giant beach ball in the Student Union attracted the attention of the few students traveling through. Soon they were eager to fill up the little space left on the ball and learn about the Chicago Principles and the various encroachments on student liberty that have occurred throughout US campuses. Our chapter moved ever closer to our 200-signature goal with about 20 new signatures, bringing our total to just over 140 with one more event to go.
The previous event on November 10th had an even greater turnout (thanks to some nicer weather and a substantial amount of post-election energy). Many members of the chapter, as well as a few state and regional representatives, manned the ball and table throughout the day spreading the message of liberty and free expression to dozens of students.
Here’s to a great 2017!Published in
