As a new YAL chapter, we’re especially excited to establish a presence here at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). After getting a great number of email sign-ups at the freshman club fair and having a high meeting attendance for the first few weeks of the semester, we knew we could give it our all during Constitution Week.
As soon as I learned about free speech walls, I shared the idea with my chapter, and they loved it. We soon got to work purchasing materials, and securing a spot on campus to spread some liberty! We have a lot of engineering talent in our chapter, and quickly assembled the wall’s frame:
We painted our plywood, and assembled the completed wall at RIT’s famous Infinity Quad, where we immediately found enthusiastic students:
We also had a table, where we handed out many pocket Constitutions:
We all agreed the RIT YAL chapter’s first Free Speech Wall was a huge success! We reminded students of their First Amendment rights while promoting our chapter. We’ll definitely be keeping the wall to paint over and use again in future years!
Also during Constitution Week, the RIT Center for Statesmanship, Law, and Liberty hosted a discussion on the Constitution and religious liberty. Many members of our YAL chapter attended, and we handed out pocket Constitutions there too!
So far it’s been a successful start here at the Rochester Institute of Technology
