Constitution Week: Press Release Template

As Constitution Day approaches, we’ve put together this press release guide and attached a sample press release below. Use this information to craft your own press release to send to local media outlets. Be sure to follow all the instructions and learn more about earning media on our media resources page too.

Short, Descriptive, Eye-Grabbing Headline

Subtitle mentioning your chapter’s/YAL’s name

CITY, STATE — Start with the most important information and brief description of your activism event. It should be a short paragraph or two that sums up the who, what, where, when, and why of your event. This information should always be factual and not opinion.

“Include a strong quote about why your event will be awesome, why it matters, and/or the impact it will make. Always put opinion statements in quotes,” your name, YAL title said.

“Here’s an additional quote about your activism,” another student from YAL said.

Provide any additional, less important information about the event here. Assume most reporters will only read the first 2-3 lines of your press release, so use your words wisely and grab their attention early.

Tie in your chapter to the national activism project. Include something like “more than 150 YAL chapters from colleges across the country will be participating in Constitution Week.”

Include a short description of your group (when it started, number of members, etc) as a footer for your release. Here’s the footer we use:
