On November 9th, fellow members of the Young Americans for Liberty came to our campus. They were rolling around a Free Speech Ball, which is really just a giant beach ball where anyone and everyone can write whatever they want. There was a huge turnout, the ball was pretty covered in writing that ranged from political to online memes. Who doesn’t want to write on a giant beach ball?
Events like these are an easy way to get people to think about free speech and talk among others who are like-minded. If there’s one thing everyone can agree on, it’s that we should be free to say what we are thinking. It’s also an easy way to get people who may not be like-minded on other topics to get together and talk casually about their differences. Everyone can learn about something new, so getting a group of strangers together to chat about different things is the best way to get various perspectives.
During this event I was able to talk with a group and laugh with them. It made the campus seem smaller and more connected, more like a family. We don’t have to agree on everything to get along, sometimes a little outside push can bring a community closer. That little push could start a domino effect, a small ripple in the water, and start something bigger!Published in
