Free Speech Ball at Pittsburg State University

On September 23, 2016, the YAL Chapter at Pittsburg State University held its first-ever Free Speech Ball in an effort to raise awareness about the University’s speech regulations, which have been rated yellow by F.I.R.E. The event was an incredible success, and the chapter was able to collect more than 70 signatures in the span of 2 hours.

Student engagement in this event was off the charts, and the entire surface of the 6-foot diameter ball was covered in colorful scribble. Students were very surprised to find out that they could write anything they wanted. “Like, even Harambe jokes?” one student laughed.

The chapter is now in talks with the VP of Student Life at the University to take a look at and change the school’s speech guidelines.
