Free Speech Ball at the University of Texas at Dallas

After I was shut down by my university while holding a membership drive, I decided that a free speech ball would be an appropriate way to protest the suppression of students’ free expression without running afoul of university rules. With the help of Michael Mastrianna of the Leadership Institute, I rolled a giant beach ball around the UT Dallas campus and asked students to express themselves by writing on the ball. The free speech ball served as a great conversation starter as students’ surprise and amusement at the sight of a giant beach ball turned to interest as they heard about its purpose. The free speech ball also got our YAL chapter noticed, since I got an interview with the university newspaper. The event was a fun and lighthearted way of promoting free speech rights on college campuses.
