Free Speech Ball @ Flagler College

On Wednesday October 18th, Young Americans for Liberty at Flagler College had a free speech ball event to celebrate free speech week. This being the third time we have had this event, we expected a great turnout and excited students. We filled the ball up, and eager students wanted to sign even before the ball was inflated. After 20 minutes of students writing comments, opinions, drawings, and anything else they could think of, we were asked to leave campus or else we would be removed by campus security. There were students protesting the ball on campus that did not like the idea of free speech, but since they were using their right to protest, I didn’t think they thought that one through very well. FIRE is working closely with YAL at Flagler College to hopefully reform some speech codes that are unfair to students.
