The Young Americans for Liberty chapter at the University of New Mexico was honored to host former Governor of our Great State of New Mexico, Gary Johnson on April 14th. Governor Johnson is an alumni of UNM and still calls New Mexico home, so it was very cool to be able to host someone with roots that we can relate to at UNM.
The YAL chapter began advertising the event through many different avenues, such as Facebook, Eventbrite, and flyers on campus. We even held a presidential straw poll featuring current front runners of the Libertarian Party, Democrat Party, and Republican Party. In this straw poll, 17% of students chose businessman Donald J. Trump, 19% of students chose former Senator-turned-Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, and a whopping 64% of students chose Governor Gary Johnson. The UNM chapter even inspired our New Mexico State University counterparts to have their own presidential straw poll in which Governor Johnson also received 64% of the student’s vote!
The event itself was a huge success. Over 100 people came to hear what the Governor had to say, and many of which were students. There were reporters from many media outlets including the the Albuquerque Journal, the state’s largest paper, and three different television news stations. The UNM Young Americans for Liberty chapter was credited in nearly every news story as the hosting organization. Our favorite article can be found here.
