During UNCC’s YAL meeting on Wednesday, we hosted a guest speaker from the Convention of States. The Convention of States Project aims to utilize Article V of the Constitution and call a convention of states. The purpose of such a convention would be to discuss three issues facing our current political system and help to meet the following goals, according to their website: “Impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government, and limit the terms of office for its officials and for members of Congress.”
This meeting sparked discussion among our chapter members and made us aware of how we can help this organization achieve their goals of limiting the power of the federal government. The Convention of States Project believes that the issues facing Washington today are a major threat to the country and aims to use the powers given to the states in the Constitution to try to give some of the power back to the people. Spreading awareness of Article 5 conventions and how a convention can be called, as well as why it should be, is a great opportunity to get college students interested in liberty and motivated to help change the current political climate.
