According to recent numbers released by Rasmussen Reports, nearly half of Americans (48%) believe that the government itself is a threat to our individual rights. More detailed findings also show that 74% of Republicans and 51% of those who consider themselves as independent feel as if the government threatens their individual rights. However 64% of Democrats seem to feel comfortable with the government in relation to their individual rights and don’t see it as so much of a threat.
Although altogether only about half of Americans feel this way, I believe this further reveals the deepening feelings of distrust between the American people and the government as more people slip out of a slumbering state of apathy. And while these numbers do seem encouraging, the percentage of Americans who feel that the government is not so much a protector of their individual rights should be twice as high.Published in
