Human computer chip implants are here…and even FDA approved

This video, linked on LRC, is a commercial for a new computer chip…a computer chip to go in people.  A company called Health Link has created a tiny, implantable chip which will link to all your medical records.  As the website explains:

Health Link is the connection between you and your personal health record. Health Link utilizes a tiny, passive microchip (the nation’s first and only microchip cleared for use by the Food & Drug Administration) and a secure, private online database that links you to your personal health record. Your Health Link is always with you and cannot be lost or stolen. It provides emergency room doctors and nurses with your vital medical and emergency contact information, allowing them to treat you rapidly, accurately and safely during an emergency.

The commercial notes how amazing it is that so much information can fit on so small a chip.  It’s not hard to imagine other sorts of information fitting on there as well.  It could be a new Social Security Number, embedded in your skin.  A unique identifier, mandatory at birth.

Naah.  The government would never use technology like this for anything we might not like.  This is a free country…right?
