YAL at IU was extremely proud and thrilled to welcome some team members from the NRA to our Bloomington campus this past week. It being the first event that we’ve held with an outside organization, we were very pleased with the turnout of this event overall.
We worked in tandem with our campus Students for Concealed Carry chapter. Together we held a small, yet effective empty holster protest and tabling day in one of our busiest building on campus. We were able to talk with interested students on campus about the timely issue of gun control and our Second Amendment rights. As expected, a lot of students rolled their eyes and walked off without giving us a second glance, but there were many individuals who were willing to have a discussion with us. A student journalist from the IDS (Indiana Daily Student) even stopped by to take our pictures for the student paper.
Later that evening we finished our event off with an amazing and informative presentation by NRA-U. There were more attendees than expected and our room filled up quickly. By the time the presentation started, we had already made it to standing room only! We provided the attendees with pizza and drinks, as well as free NRA and YAL swag. The NRA presenters gave a great discussion-style lecture and closed with a Q&A time. Everyone in attendance left with a free year membership to the NRA.
After the lecture, members of YAL, SCC, and the NRA met up for a post-meeting social where we discussed further networking opportunities and ways to be better activists in our areas.Published in
