Lakeland YAL put up a free speech wall in the school cafeteria in celebration of the First Amendment, and in preparation for Constitution Day.
The first two days, students posted about themselves, and made other light, non-controversial comments.
So far, we have had about ten additional people sign up for our club.
On day three, students started to test the extent of “free speech,” and a few swear words and negative comments appeared. While the swear words seem to be ignored, the negative comments have been addressed with positive comments, or questions. It will be interesting to see what our final wall looks like. So far, our administration has also been very supportive of this event, which we appreciate.Published in
