Constitution Day at Macalester College was given just one line in the school’s daily email, with no mention of YAL. But Macalester Young Americans for Liberty took part in Constitution Week festivities at our small campus in St. Paul, Minnesota!
We chose to celebrate the 1st Amendment by building a free speech wall. This was our first time with a big activism display on campus this year, and we received a much warmer welcome from the very progressive student body than we had in years past.
Debate on the wall ranged from topics such as vegetarianism, to 2016 presidential candidates, to Macalester’s highly contentious student organization, “Kick Wells Fargo Off Campus.”
The event was a big success as we were able to engage a ton of students during the lunch hour! In total, we handed out more than 100 Constitutions and had a similar number write on the wall. Thanks to the good work of our tablers, Mac YAL was able to identify like-minded thinkers and we nearly filled an entire sign-up sheet; no small feat for a campus with a student body of about 2000.
Next up for our chapter will be an event on gun control!Published in
