NEWBERRY, S.C. — The Newberry College chapter of Young Americans for Liberty held its first Liberty Supper on Oct. 18, 2017, featuring two South Carolina legislators as guest speakers.
Rep. Rick Martin of Newberry and Rep. Josiah Magnuson of Spartanburg keynoted the supper, which brought together students, leaders, and community members for a meal, fellowship, and civic discussion. The event was held off-campus at Hawg Heaven Barbeque in Prosperity, seven miles southeast of Newberry.
Rep. Martin spoke on the importance of protecting property rights and limiting government, and Rep. Magnuson spoke on the relationship between liberty and faith. Both representatives were elected to the South Carolina House in November 2016.
The supper, the first major event held by the Newberry College chapter, also served as a fundraiser. Tickets were sold in advance to gauge expected attendance, ultimately 22 people, consisting of state and county elected officials, college students and faculty, and members of the surrounding community.
Our chapter’s first major event was considered a success, and we will now turn our attention to the upcoming Students for Liberty Regional Conference in Charlotte in November, as well as more events focusing on specific issues.Published in
