Operation Politically Homeless @ Indiana University of Pennsylvania

On October 16, 2012, IUP Young Americans for Liberty conducted Operation Politically Homeless from noon to 5 p.m. outside the library. The event garnered 20 new contacts, fostered increased political discussion, and helped many to understand where their views where aligned on the political map.

Operation Politically Homeless

Somewhere between 60 and 70 people filled out the world’s smallest political quiz, which is created and distributed by Advocates for Self Government.  This quiz displays 10 statements and the individual taking the quiz marks whether or not they agree with the statement.  From there their political affiliation can be pin pointed on the political map to give them a good idea of where they stand.

One of the most exciting parts of this event was the numerous people who filled it out and previously had no idea that they agreed with the libertarian political philosophy.  It was also interesting to have people get plotted when they were somewhat surprised by what political philosophy they most agreed with.

It was also great to answer questions about the groups philosophy to interested students.  Personally I enjoy explaining the libertarian angle and having people say something like “Oh, I’ve never thought of it that way before”.

Students were quite active with the event and we even had some students who aren’t affiliated with the group, and some weren’t even in the libertarian realm philosophically, yet stuck around our table for sometime and helped us invite students that were passing by to come over and do the quiz.

I’d encourage anyone who hasn’t done this form of activism to do it.  It’s great at fostering interest and discussion.  Our group will definitely do this event another few times this semester.
