After sending a message to my chapter of YAL with a joke about “throwing Molotovs” for tax day (a joke, mind you) I found that many of my members had reacted by reminding me that “big brother was watching.”
This was disturbing to me since they were both serious and possibly correct. Whether or not we are truly being watched by the government, however, we must remember that we truly are endowed with inalienable rights.
We have allowed the perceived power of the government to scare us, but we should work against this trend by exercising the rights guaranteed us by the Constitution. The government only has to have the power that the citizens allow it to have. South Park did an episode about perceived power which illustrates exactly what I’m talking about:
