The Slippery Rock University Young Americans for Liberty had two goals coming back from Christmas break: recruitment and increasing our exposure on campus. This was to be accomplished with strategic and aggresive tabling, creative advertising, and high-spirited activism. After three long and hard-fought weeks of recruitment, it’s evident YAL @ SRU far exceed our goals.
Let’s go straight to the numbers:
- 7 days of tabling (2 hours each day = 14 hours total!)
- OVER 800 NEW SIGN-UPS!!!
- 10 professional yard signs
- 500 professional, custom YAL pens
- 50 professional flyers
- 4 professional posters
- Crony Capitalism is Phony Capitalism Event
- A great first informational meeting
- One team, one dream!
Even before classes started, the leadership team planned the biggest, most successful recruitment drive ever. The strategy was simple: table in difference locations and use creative ways to advertise around campus. YAL @ SRU tabled in many different locations including the Union, Bailey Library, and Boozel Dining Hall. This resulted in over 800 new newsletter recipients, increasing YAL’s influence on campus.
The team wanted to use yard signs around campus because they are great way to get the word out about your organization. They designed one that was simple, easy to read, and stood out. The slogan, “Join the Revolution,” was chosen because it demands attention and displays urgency. This is now the official slogan used for the SRU YAL newsletter, handouts, and flyers. These yard signs were put up all around campus including by the gym, library, Union, dining halls, classroom buildings, and intersections.
The team also ordered 500 customs YAL pens to hand out. Pens are not only effective at creating curiosity and bringing in new recruits, they also give legitimacy to your organization and entice students to approach your table.
Fifty flyers were put up around campus and in classroom buildings to notify students when meetings are held. Four large posters were also put up in heavy traffic areas to further expose people to our chapter.
The first meeting of the semester was a great success with over 20 people showing up. This is huge growth considering only 7 people showed up to the first meeting last semester. Additionally, most new members are excited to be active on campus.
The SRU YAL chapter also participated in the Crony Capitalism is Phony Capitalism event on Valentines Day. Candy and Valentines were handed out to students which discussed the love affair between Big Business and Big Government. The team, never missing an opportunity to dress up, put on their Obama and Bush masks and their Big Business outfit to pose for a Valentines picture. They do look like a very close couple.
