Earlier today it looked like Rep. Stupak and other pro-life legislators would prevent the health care bill from passing. The Hill reported:
Hours before a scheduled vote on healthcare reform, Democratic leaders don’t have the votes….There have been various reports on Sunday that Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) and other anti-abortion lawmakers have agreed to an abortion deal involving an executive order from the Obama administration. However, Stupak’s office are strongly denying those reports.
Apparently (big suprise!) Stupak’s office was lying: A deal has been struck, as the Washington Post announces:
President Obama, rallying last-minute support for landmark health-care legislation nearing a crucial vote in the House, announced Sunday that he will issue an executive order after passage attesting that the bill is consistent with longstanding restrictions on the use of federal funds for abortions.
The arrangement won the support of a key bloc of anti-abortion House Democrats, whose leader, Rep. Bart Stupak D-Mich.), said at a news conference, “I’m pleased to announce we have an agreement.”
So at this point, at least, it looks like this mammoth addition to the welfare/warfare state is going to pass.Published in
