The Geography of a Recession

This video shows the rate of unemployment by county from January 2007 to September 2009.  Spoiler: it gets worse, and all that stimulating doesn’t seem to be working. 

Interesting to note, however, is the little pocket of prosperity conveniently located around DC — one of just a handful of locations east of the Mississippi that’s not dominated by the purple and green of 7-10+ % unemployment.  This map doesn’t show it, but it would be interesting to see a comparison of unemployment rates by county and the amount of stimulus spending they’ve been subjected to — er, recieved.
