After a night of partying at one of the largest Halloween gatherings at any college, the last thing most students would want to do would be to wake up early and drive to a conference several cities over. Yet that’s exactly what a group of students from UNC’s Young Americans for Liberty chapter did Saturday, November 1 when they traveled to the Students For Liberty Carolina Regional Conference at Salem College!
Two of our members were SFL conference veterans, but the majority of our group had never experienced such a large group of young libertarians in one place. And what an experience it was! Our group had the privilege of hearing speakers such as John Allison, former CEO of BB&T and current CEO of the Cato Institute, Jim Lark, former Chairman of the Libertarian Party, James Otteson, Executive Director of the BB&T Center for the Study of Capitalism, Miriam Weeks, also known as Belle Knox, and many other exceptional speakers.
Beyond the fantastic speaker line-up, our members were able to speak with and learn about liberty-minded organizations such as the Cato Institute, the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, the Foundation for Economic Education, and many, many other phenomenal organizations. Our members came away with a broader understanding of the myriad resources available for pro-liberty students and the unique and important roles each organization plays.
Overall, this conference was a formative experience for our members. Many came away interested in getting further involved with SFL and became especially excited for the International SFL Conference in February. All told, this conference was a great success and UNC YAL is proud to have been able to support it!Published in
