UCLA’s YAL Chapter was fortunate enough to host Dinesh D’Souza on January 31st, 2018. After months of coordination and preparation, last Wednesday’s event finally saw the completion of YAL’s efforts and endeavors, leading to a spectacular event. We were able to include a large group of students, faculty, and local citizens in the crowd to hear our guest speaker and ask questions regarding Mr. D’Souza’s career and political principles.
This event would not have met the success it did without the strong leadership of our YAL board and the work done by all UCLA YAL members. From handing out informational flyers on Bruinwalk, to writing various social media posts to help advertise, to personally discussing the upcoming event with peers and faculty, UCLA YAL accomplished a noteworthy feat from Mr. D’Souza visit. The preparation and result of the event both were great experiences for us students to learn the behind-the-scenes of bringing such a prominent, conservative speaker to a university environment.
With all of these efforts, in the end, Mr. D’Souza’s words were well-appreciated by the audience, and his advice will stay with us long past his short period on the UCLA Campus. “Don’t ask what organization you should join,” Mr. D”Souza told us last Wednesday, “ask yourself what needs to be done.” Us here at UCLA will continue with what we feel needs to be done, by spreading American conservatism and libertarian principles across our campus, and we are incredibly thankful to have such a great organization like YAL to support and bolster us.
