1 Great time!
Here at the University of Central Florida (UCF), we wasted no time kicking off our Fall 2011 Recruitment Drive. We started the drive at the Florida Liberty Summit on Friday, August 19th and had the unique opportunity to talk with like-minded students not only from UCF and the Orlando area but from all over the Sunshine state. We encouraged many students to join YAL and even to start their own chapters!
On Sunday August 21st, we started our efforts on campus. UCF held its annual “Opening Knight” student activity fair. Because of an unfortunate mix of bureaucracy and “free speech zones,” we were forced to hold our event outside of the student union but nevertheless found success in just taking the time to stop and talk to the incoming freshman about liberty.
From there we implemented Step 2: We tabled. It did not take us very long standing in the Florida heat to come up with this brilliant tabling idea – POPSICLES. We bought freezer pops, put out a giant sign which read “FREE POPSICLES,” and handed them out in exchange for one minute of their time to let us explain a little bit about YAL, our principles, and when we meet. It was an instant success. We almost always had a line at the table of students waiting to get their Popsicle and hear a little bit about YAL. Most students stuck around to ask more questions and talk about our organization.
Then the day we had all been waiting for finally arrived: Tuesday, August 30th. We held a short information meeting at a favorite campus hangout called Wackadoo’s. We all had high hopes of a big turnout because of our recruitment efforts; however no one could have imagined a YAL at UCF record of 40 people turn out to the meeting. We took the time to introduce officers, talk about previous YAL at UCF successful events, encourage people to join YAL National, and threw around some ideas for the upcoming semester.
While we are thrilled with these achievements, our Recruitment Drive ain’t finished yet. Looking forward to the rest of this week we will host the first ever YAL at UCF tailgate – a social event where members can relax, have informal discussion, and most importantly have a lot of fun before watching the best football team in the state of Florida (UCF) play. We will hold one more tabling event next Wednesday September 7th, so stay tuned for the finally tally and a YAL at UCF Recruitment Drive overview video.
