On November 2, UW-Madison YAL had our first free speech ball of the year! The cold, drizzly weather didn’t have us feeling optimistic, but the event was still more successful than anticipated.
Additionally, since we are at such a “progressive” school, we feared that someone would want to stab our free speech ball, or that administration would attempt to stop us. Thankfully, neither of those things occurred, and people actually loved our free speech ball! We had tons of sign ups, people enthusiastically taking part of the event, and we even ran the event longer than planned because of how well it was going!
The success of the free speech ball has given us some hope for the future of our “progressive”campus. We hope that people are realizing how dangerous it is to limit speech and how important free speech is to intellectual environments.
