Vanderbilt YAL Interest Meeting HUGE Success


Vanderbilt YAL’s first official meeting this semester was a HUGE success as we hosted our faculty advisor, Dr. John Lachs, Centennial Professor of Philosophy, who spoke on the “The Significance of Individuals.” Prof. Lachs delivered a wonderful speech interlaced with humor and optimism.

We had a great turnout at the event and many freshmen in attendence. Best of all, we had 3 TV news stations covering our meeting:  WSMV-TV Channel 4, NashvilleNewsChannel5.com, and WKRN-TV Nashville.
 
Our meeting concluded with a Presidential Debate Watching Party and several students were interviewed by the media during the breaks.

(We even heard that Rand Paul’s bodyguard in Bowling Green, KY saw the footage of our meeting on Channel 5.)

So, how did we get so much media attention? The answers lies in the power of press releases.

Vanderbilt Students Host Debate Watching Party Tonight

Nashville, TN – September 7th, 2011  —  Young Americans for Liberty, the libertarian student organization at Vanderbilt University, is  hosting a Republican Presidential Debate Watching Party tonight at their first meeting of the semester. It will be held in the Vanderbilt Commons Center Room 237 at 6PM.

Members of the press are invited to attend and interview students on their reactions to the candidates during and after the debate.

Prior to the debate, YAL@VU will also be having a guest speaker, Dr. John Lachs, Centennial Professor of Philosophy at Vanderbilt delivering a short lecture.

Free food and drinks will be served.

Prof. John Lachs to Speak on the “The Significance of Individuals”

Nashville, TN – September 3rd, 2011  —  Dr. John Lachs, Centennial Professor of Philosophy at Vanderbilt and faculty advisor for Young Americans for Liberty at Vanderbilt University, will be speaking on the “The Significance of Individuals” at YAL’s  official semester kick-off and interest meeting next week on Wednesday, September 7th, in the Commons Center Room 237 at 6PM. 

Prof. Lachs earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Yale University and has been teaching at Vanderbilt since 1967. He is widely known as one of the best professors in the philosophy department and received the Madison Sarratt Prize for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching (1972), the Graduate Teaching Award (2000) and the Outstanding Commitment to Teaching Freshmen Award (1999). He is also the chair of the American Philosophical Association’s Centennial committee.

Young Americans for Liberty, the libertarian student organization at Vanderbilt University, is excited to be hosting Prof. Lachs at its first meeting and is organizing a discussion group this semester on the book The Morality of Capitalism. YAL will be distributing free copies of this book at the interest meeting. Students interested in discussing the philosophical, political, and economic foundations of capitalism are especially encouraged to attend.

YAL@VU also plans to announce a comprehensive schedule of events for this semester at the interest meeting.
