Visualizing the Debt at UIUC

Young American’s for Liberty and Illini for Liberty members at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign visualized the debt on March 31.  We took 16boards and carved the debt into them, then we covered the back of each board with red construction paper to create a striking image of just how much in the red we really are.

Leading up to the event, we posted flyers in academic building all over campus.  When the day came, we set up shop right on our main quad where thousands of students walk by every day.  We had 9 activists rotating from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to recruit members, answer questions, and hand out materials.  Everyone who walked by was checking us out, and as a small club on a huge campus we met a lot of interested people.  We recruited 15 potential students, which would more than double our membership!

We also wrote out the message “This Debt is our Burden,” to remind students that even though our generation didn’t get this country into this mess, we’re going to have to dig it out.  Overall it was a massive success!
