The White House recently requested that citizens report any “fishy” emails or conversations they overhear. It now appears that, not only is this a violation of the 1st Amendment, but also a violation of 5 U.S.C. § 552a of the U.S. Code:
…maintain no record describing how any individual exercises rights guaranteed by the First Amendment unless expressly authorized by statute or by the individual about whom the record is maintained or unless pertinent to and within the scope of an authorized law enforcement activity.
The White House might claim that it is not governed by this, but I would argue that as a major part of the Executive Branch, they very much so. Help spread this information — it is essential that we protect our liberties as individual citizens.Published in
