YAL’s Minnesota State Convention Report

Last Saturday, Young Americans for Liberty hosted our third and largest state convention yet in Minneapolis, Minnesota! 165 activists gathered at the University of Minnesota to hear from leaders like Kurt Bills and Dr. Tom Woods, and to network and train with like-minded activists.

After a few words from the national staff, we started off the day with our morning keynote speaker, Minnesota State Representative Kurt Bills. As a former Senate candidate, he was able to speak about the difficulties of political campaigns and offer practical advice about getting involved in politics.

We also heard from our 9 generous sponsors. They ranged from local to national organizations, and provided excellent networking opportunities for the students in attendance.

If you are a student or recent graduate who is interested in finding work in the liberty movement, the opportunity to network with pro-liberty organizations is another great reason to make time to attend one of our seven remaining State ConventionsIt’s not every day you get such a unique opportunity to jump-start your career in politics!

After lunch, Chris Doss from the Leadership Institute joined us for his third YAL state convention to lecture on becoming effective leaders in the Liberty Movement. He was followed by a series of panelists that discussed a myriad of issues.

Our first panel, which was comprised entirely of local YAL leaders, discussed the emerging role of the youth in today’s politics and their own experiences as young leaders in their communities. Our final panel addressed issues specific to Minnesota, and touched on recruitment techniques, coalition-building, education and messaging.

We wrapped up the convention with words from our evening keynote speaker, Dr. Tom Woods. As a senior fellow of the Ludwig von Mises Institute, Dr. Woods offered keen insight on our current economic problems and also briefly touched on our current foreign policy issues.

Many thanks to our Minnesota leadership team for putting this convention together, and to our speakers and sponsors for spending their weekend inspiring our attendees to their best activism yet.
