Repeal SUNY Cobleskill’s ban on self-defense weapons.

SUNY Cobleskill’s Student Conduct Codes leave students vulnerable by restricting even non-lethal self defense tools such as pepper spray on campus. Student Conduct Code 21 in the SUNY Cobleskill Student Handbook defines a weapon as “items, whether real or realistic, used to cause harm or threaten to harm people…” It goes on to list “dangerous chemicals of any kind” as among the expressly prohibited weapons.

Pepper spray is a common tool used by vulnerable students to keep themselves safe and Dr. Marion Terenzio, as President of SUNY Cobleskill, should not interfere with students’ ability to defend themselves. I hereby petition President Terenzio and her staff to amend the Student Conduct Code and restore our right to self defense on campus.
