Restore Self Defense at Ole Miss

As students at Ole Miss, we believe in the fundamental right to protect ourselves from harm. Recent incidents across college campuses nationwide highlight the urgent need for accessible, non-lethal self-defense tools such as pepper spray and tasers. However, the University of Mississippi’s restrictive weapons policy denies students these protections, leaving them vulnerable in situations where self-defense may be critical. Current policies ban “any device from which a shot, projectile, or other object may be discharged by force,” along with “stun guns” and “chemical deterrents.” These rules effectively prohibit tools widely recognized as safe and effective for personal protection, jeopardizing student safety on campus.

Permitting non-lethal self-defense tools is a vital step in addressing increasing safety concerns. While campus police play an important role in maintaining security, their response time may not always be immediate, exposing students to unnecessary risks. Pepper spray and tasers are non-lethal, user-friendly tools designed to enable individuals to protect themselves in dangerous situations without causing harm to others. Granting students the right to carry these tools empowers them to feel secure and confident in their ability to respond to threats. Universities such as the University of North Florida have updated their policies to allow these tools, leading to safer environments and increased peace of mind for students.

We call on Ole Miss to amend its restrictive weapons policy to explicitly allow students, faculty, and staff to carry pepper spray and tasers for self-defense, provided they adhere to state and federal laws. By updating this policy, the university can demonstrate its commitment to student safety and personal freedom, fostering a campus culture that prioritizes security and accountability.

Sign this petition to urge Ole Miss to make this necessary change. Allowing students to carry non-lethal self-defense tools will create a safer, more secure campus environment for everyone. Together, we can advocate for a policy that upholds our right to personal safety and enhances the well-being of the entire university community. Your voice matters—join us in pushing for this essential reform.
