Restore Self Defense at UNLV

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) faces critical safety challenges, as highlighted by its federally mandated crime report. Between 2019 and 2021, the report disclosed 28 cases of rape, 47 burglaries, and 14 aggravated assaults on campus, reflecting a consistent pattern of danger. Additionally, the city of Las Vegas has a violent crime rate that exceeds the national average by 25%, with 315 incidents of sexual assault reported in 2022 alone. These alarming statistics emphasize the unsafe environment that surrounds and affects the campus community. Key areas, such as parking garages and less populated walkways, are frequently targeted for criminal activity, particularly against individuals walking alone at night.

Allowing students to carry pepper spray and tasers would provide an essential layer of security. Research indicates that non-lethal self-defense tools deter 95% of potential attackers, ensuring personal safety. The University of North Florida (UNF) has implemented a policy permitting the possession of non-lethal self-defense tools, such as tasers and pepper spray, for personal protection. This change has enhanced campus safety while maintaining a secure and responsible environment. UNLV should follow this example to ensure the safety of its students.

We call on UNLV to amend its policy to allow students to carry these critical tools of self-defense and protect themselves across all areas of campus. To complement this policy change, educational programs on responsible use can be implemented. Addressing this issue represents a vital step toward prioritizing student safety and fostering a secure campus environment.

This petition demands that the UNLV administration immediately lift the ban on non-lethal self-defense tools and empower students to safeguard themselves against the persistent threat of campus and community crime.
