Fight to Remove the Pepper Spray Ban at George Mason University

In Virginia, it is currently legal to carry pepper aerosol sprays.

On campus at George Mason University, per the University Policy Number 1120, students are prohibited from carrying pepper aerosol sprays. The policy states “The possession of any weapon on campus by any member of the faculty, staff or student body, with the exception of law enforcement officials as cited in the policy portion of this procedure is prohibited”. According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, “1 in every 5 women and 1 in every 16 men are sexually assaulted while at college.”

Additionally, in Student Conduct: Frequently Asked Questions under Section 4. which violations often result in suspension or expulsion?  it states:” possession or use of firearms, fireworks, or other weapons, or chemicals which are of an explosive or corrosive nature on university property or at university functions.”

Students should be allowed to carry the tools necessary to protect themselves. I hereby petition Dr. Gregory Washington to amend campus policy and allow the student body at the age of 18 or older to carry pepper aerosol spray for purposes of self-defense.
