Allow Non-Lethal Self Defense at University of Nevada-Reno

The University of Nevada, Reno currently receives an F rating on safety from the American School Search, underscoring the significant risks students face daily. Despite this, the university bans students from carrying non-lethal self-defense tools like tasers and pepper spray, leaving the campus community vulnerable to crime. From 2019 to 2021, the university’s federally mandated crime report revealed 33 cases of rape, along with 52 burglaries and 17 aggravated assaults, reflecting a pattern of consistent danger. Furthermore, Reno’s violent crime rate is 41% higher than the national average, with 377 incidents of sexual assault reported in 2022 alone, emphasizing the unsafe environment surrounding the campus. Many areas, including poorly lit parking lots and dormitory corridors, are frequent targets for crime, especially for students who walk alone at night.

Allowing students to carry pepper spray or tasers would empower them to take control of their safety, as studies show that 95% of attacks are deterred when victims use these tools. Other urban universities, such as the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, already permit self-defense tools without compromising safety. We demand that UNR lift the ban on non-lethal weapons and grant students unrestricted access to carry them across all campus areas. Additionally, educational programs can ensure these tools are used responsibly. By addressing this issue, the university will take a critical step toward improving safety and protecting its students from harm. It’s time to prioritize student safety and empower individuals to defend themselves against the rising tide of campus and community crime.
