Free Speech should not be something that college administrators usurp to fit their time and place agendas. Free Speech is meant for anyone to express themselves at any time in any public place on campus. It is not to be contained to a “Zone”
The Policy in the “FREE SPEECH, DEMONSTRATION AND PROTEST POLICY” states “The University has established high visibility areas on campus in order to facilitate robust debate and the free exchange of ideas. These Free Speech Zones may be used by any person, including non-students and other campus guests.”
We recognize the fundamental importance of free speech in our day-to-day lives. Whether it’s discussing coursework, debating current events, or advocating for causes close to our hearts, our ability to express ourselves openly and without constraint is essential to our intellectual and personal development. Designated zones restrict our ability to engage in spontaneous dialogue, stifling the vibrant exchange of ideas that should be the hallmark of higher education.
We hereby petition President Joseph S. Paul to amend the current policy to Abolish Free Speech Zones and return the right to free speech to the students in public outdoors on campus.
