Allow Pepper Spray for Self Defense at Ithaca College

In NY it is currently legal to carry pepper aerosol sprays.

Ithaca College’s Weapons Policy is broad and leaves room for anyone to fear using any type of self-defense on campus. The current Policy states “The possession or use of firearms, ammunition, fireworks, or other dangerous weapons (including knives and paintball guns) on College-owned property is strictly forbidden and is cause for disciplinary action. “

Pepper spray is a common tool used by vulnerable students to keep themselves safe and Dr. La Jerne Terry Cornish, as President of Ithaca College, should not interfere with students’ ability to defend themselves. I hereby petition President La Jerne Terry Cornish and her staff to amend the Student Conduct Code and restore our right to self-defense on campus using Pepper Spray.
