The University Policy Manual restricts students from possessing weapons on campus. Students at SMU are deprived of their fundamental right to self-defense. This mandate applies to all students, both graduate, and undergraduate.
This policy leaves students without any real means to protect themselves against violence or theft. Students should not be deprived of the inherent right to self-defense simply for being students on a college campus. SMU should respect its adult students’ responsibility to carry firearms legally as they would otherwise carry responsibly off-campus.
We, the undersigned students of SMU, hereby petition R. Gerald Turner to revise the University Policy Manual and restore the rights of all SMU students to defend themselves.
