We, the undersigned, call on the University of Central Florida to allow students to carry Tasers for self-defense. With crime rates in Orlando, including the area surrounding UCF, higher than the national average, student safety is at serious risk. Tasers provide an effective, non-lethal means of defense, giving students the ability to protect themselves in dangerous situations.
While UCF prioritizes student safety, campus police cannot be everywhere at all times. In critical moments, students may need to rely on themselves, and having a Taser could make all the difference. Denying students this option leaves them vulnerable to the very threats we seek to prevent.
We urge President Alexander N. Cartwright to revise university policy and allow Tasers on campus. This change would affirm UCF’s commitment to student safety, empowering students to protect themselves and ensuring peace of mind in an unpredictable world.
